Driving in Europe – should I take a first aid kit with me?

What we recommend?

The compulsory equipment while driving in Europe depends on the country you are driving in and is important that you get informed on the requirements when you are planning your journey.

However, in order to be prepared in case of an emergency, we recommend that wherever in Europe you are planning to drive to take with you:

  • A fully stocked first aid kit
  • Warning triangle
  • Reflective jacket
  • A foil blanket
  • A fire extinguisher
  • A torch

Austria

Compulsory equipment:

  • warning triangle for vehicles with more than two wheels and it must comply to EC regulations 27
  • first aid kit in a strong, dirt proof box
  • reflective jacket/waistcoat for vehicles with more than two wheels and it must be compliant to EN471

Good to know: Vienna, the capital of Austria, has a large pedestrian zone therefore parking in limited.

Interesting fact: Over 60% of the land area is occupied by the Austrian Alps.

France and Monaco:

Compulsory equipment:

  • warning triangle for vehicles with more than two wheels
  • reflective jacket compliant with EN471
  • breathalysers are compulsory for drivers of all motor vehicles including motorcyclist but excluding mopeds. The breathalyser must show an ‘NF’ number and must be certified by the French authorities.

Good to know: Using the horn in built up areas is prohibited except in cases of immediate danger.

Interesting fact: France is the first country in the world to produce wine and liquor.

Germany

Compulsory equipment:

  • winter tyres are required by law for any vehicles using roads in Germany during winter weather conditions
  • although it is not compulsory to carry a warning triangle, it is highly recommended to carry one as all drivers must signal their vehicles in case of a breakdown. For residents is a compulsory requirement.
  • also in the case of the first aid kit, although it is not compulsory to carry one it is recommended that visitors equip their vehicles with a first aid kit. For residents this is compulsory equipment.

Good to know: There are restrictions on the circulations of vehicles in several German cities in order to minimise the levels of emission of fine particles in some areas.

Interesting fact: The Berlin Central Train Station is considered the biggest train station in Europe.

Greece

Compulsory equiment:

  • fire extinguisher
  • first aid kit
  • warning triangle for vehicles with more than two wheels

Good to know: Parking illegally in Greece is taken very serious with the police being empowered to confiscate the number plates of illegally parked vehicles. Although this only applies to Greek-registered vehicles, drivers of foreign registered vehicles are recommended to be careful where parking.

Interesting fact: Greece has more than 3000 islands.

Italy and San Marino

Compulsory equipment:

  • warning triangle for vehicles with more than two wheels
  • reflective jacket for vehicles with more than two wheels

Good to know: Traffic is restricted in many historical towns and circulation is only permited for residents.

Interesting fact: The smallest country in the world, Vatican, is enclosed in Italy.

Spain

Compulsory equipment:

  • spare tyre
  • warning triangle for vehicles with more than two wheels
  • reflective jacket/ waistcoat. Must be worn if the driver and/or any passenger exists the vehicle while immobilised on motorways and main or busy roads.

Good to know: In urban areas it is prohibited to sound the horn at any time, except in case of an emergency.

Interesting fact: In some cities in Spain in one way streets, vehicles must be parked on the side of the road where houses bear uneven numbers on uneven days of the month, and on the side of even numbers on even days of the month.

Turkey

Compulsory equipment:

  • first aid kit for vehicles with more than two wheels
  • fire extinguisher for vehicles with more than two wheels
  • 2 warning triangles
  • spare tyre

Good to know: If an accident happens it is compulsory for the police to be called and a report must be obtained.

Interesting fact: Istanbul is the only city in the world situated on two continents- Europe and Asia.
